The Power of the Minority

One of the things we quickly learn about God is how unpredictable, uncharacteristic, and unorthodox He is. He is so superior and so unique; He refuses to be put in a box. God reminds us that “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways” (Isa. 55:8), and “How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!” (Rom. 11:33b). One of His unorthodox ways is His use of the minority.

According to Wikipedia, majority rule is the principle that the group that has the most supporters gets its way. With God, a minority is a majority.

  • God used a little baby’s cry (Moses) to move the heart of Pharoah’s daughter and raised up a prophet and deliverer to lead 2–3 million slaves to escape Egypt (Exodus 2:1–10).

  • The Lord fed at least 25,000 people with a boy’s lunch of 5 barley loaves and two fish and still had 12 baskets left over (Mark 6:33–44).

  • God used a teenager named David with a slingshot and one smooth stone to slay the giant Goliath and rout the Philistine army (1 Sam. 17:20–50).

  • God whittled down Gideon’s army from 32,000 men to 300 and defeated the mighty Midianites who had over 100,000 (Judges 7).

  • God used a little child to teach His disciples a big lesson on humility (Matt. 18:1–5).

  • God used two spies (Joshua & Caleb) to motivate God’s people to take the promised land of Canaan (Number 13:1–33).

  • God used a widow's one last meal to provide food and drink for a hungry prophet named Elijah, and she and her son continued to be fed for many days (1 Kings 17:8–16).

  • Moses and Aaron led a nation of slaves (Israelites) out of Egypt when they stood up to Pharoah (leader of the greatest empire in the world at that time) with a stick and a simple five words spoken seven different times, “Let My people go!” (Exodus 8:20).

Too often, we wrongly think we need a lot of people or money or opportunity or access or a majority opinion to do something great to really make a difference. Nonsense. God often delights in taking a minority of people or things and using it to bring about great success.

Let us not forget what Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come out and nest in its branches” (Matthew 13:31–32).

God specializes in the minority, so give Him your little and see what He does with it. He is never “restrained to save by many or by few” (1 Sam. 14:6).
